Camp Details
what living in camp will be like
INFRASTRUCTURE or “what is my financial contribution going to help create?”
Your money goes into materials, transport, and organizing for our physical spaces, power, sound, lighting, a kitchen set up, food supply, shower set up, bike rack for 120 bikes, multiple shade structures. What you will need to bring is your own bedding and tent and personal effects. We highly recommend you bring a bike.
For 2007, we will be spiffing up the kitchen quite a bit, putting some money into making a nice shower set-up, looking into getting a communal water supply for cooking and washing, plus hiring someone to pump and take out the grey water.
CAMP ACTIVITIES
Some will be prescheduled and in the printed calendar of Burning Man events, like the beginner’s classes and the center camp jam. Other activities, both open and internal to camp-and-friends, will arise organically during the week… focus jams, labs, performance instigations, special classes, etc.
Main communication methods during burning man will be…
- Camp meetings set at this point for Monday evening, Thursday evening (Monday meeting, we would like everyone to be there for, Thursday is optional.
- dry erase boards for posting plans, desires, brainstorms, etc.
- informal communication around camp.
Goto Participate as it updates for details of what camp is going to be hosting
This is an organic process … let’s just jump in with enthusiasm and see what happens.
WORKSHIFTS
Everyone will be expected to do workshifts during the week, in addition to signing up for either set up or take down of camp. We haven't yet sussed all of this out yet, but basically when you arrive at camp, someone will greet you and, amongst other things, show you where the workshift board is, where you will be expected to sign up for about 3 hours of workshift.
Workshifts will be things like dinner cook, dinner clean, space cleaning, mopping center camp dance floor, etc.
It got a little scattered last year, so we will have someone whose duty it is to keep that organized and we will also double up some of the more important shifts and add quite a few more cleaning shifts.
FOOD
We are NOT doing all our meals together. There will be a communal dinner every night at 6pm, which you can be there for as you like. Again, community is invited, not insisted upon. We have a communal food stock for people to access and collaborate with as is the flow for breakfast, snack, and lunch.
What to expect food-wise? Dinners will be organic vegan with vegetarian options. We will also have a pretty thorough supply of foods for breakfast making, snacks, lunch, tea, and coffee. Any suggestions about what might make a large group of people happy in a frugal manner, feel free to send them. We have access to wholesale ordering of organic food, as well as some interesting sources of donations of produce.
Water
We will work this out as we get closer. We may bring a big group water supply, but for the moment, plan that we will each bring the water that we need, so think…
Bring with you 2/3 gallon of water per day you are going to be there for the communal water supply (food making, clean-up, etc) and whatever else you need for yourself for drinking and showering (1/2 to 1 gallon or so per day?) …
Showers
A favorite option is to listen for the shouts of “water truck” and strip off all of your clothes as you run naked through the streets to catch a shower behind the slow moving trucks that spray water on the dirt to keep the dust down.
However, it is nice sometimes to just have a shower when you want it, so we will have a communal shower set up. We want to upgrade the system from last year. If you want to be a part of the team engineering this, please get in touch. I think with a little effort, we can have something really nice that will just make our days that much more pleasureable!
What to bring?
Basically, you are responsible for your own living situation. This can be as minimal as a sleeping bag, pad, and tent, or can be as over-the top as bringing your personal dome or RV. For a list of recommended items to make your life more pleasant, goto What to Bring?
What is Burning Man like?
I won’t even try… goto the Burning Man web site and check out the CQ article from the first year...
Arrival/Departure
We are allowed to enter the space on Saturday the 25th whenever we like. We will have our site already marked out for us.
We will be doing a big camp clean on Sunday the 2nd and then a break-down and final camp clean on Monday the 3rd. If you like, you can stay for some days after and help with the overall clean up effort, which I hear is an interesting experience.
We ask everyone who is coming to camp to be there for 2 of the following ...Load-in (Nevada City on the 24th), Set up (Playa on the 25th), Clean-up (Playa, the 3rd), Load-out (the 4th, Nevada City). Let us know ahead of time, which of these you can commit to. If you can't do at least two of these, contact us and perhaps we can arrange some other form of group contribution ahead of time.
Note for those wanting to be there for set-up!!!: The Burning Man organization will need to know ahead of time the names of people who are arriving on Saturday or Sunday for set-up, so let us know as soon as you know, so we can get them a list. Last year, they needed this list by mid-July. If you are not on this list, you are not allowed in, even if you show up after a 9 hour drive, they may still make you wait until Sunday at midnight if you are not on the magic list. (Weekend arrival is very cool, by the way! You really get to see the city rise up and are well-acclimated before things start to get crazy.)
There will also be a small crew of us coming on Friday to start laying out the lines of our little village and getting things ready for set-up. let us know if you are really gung ho and want to be in this crew.
It is a really amazing thing to be there for the whole time, watch the city rise up out of the dust and then disappear again!
