Contact Fundamentals (beg/int) – a systematic study of the physics and play of contact. The fundamentals classes look at typical concepts like weight exchange, architecture and body organization, working off balance, manipulation/surrender/resistance, movement into and out of the floor, physical listening skills, and playful readiness for the unexpected. While looking at a wide range of basic lift vocabulary, we see how this vocabulary serves as a base to spring off of, as opposed to a definition of the dance. Through a study of physical listening and “readiness” we cultivate a joy in the play of the unexpected, rather than a recreation of the known. The Fundamentals classes are intended both for those new to contact and for more experienced dancers who want to deepen their study of the principles that drive a contact dance.
