Dancing Wilderness Lab
August 22-30, 2009: Sierra Nevada Mountains, CA
A
temporary community exploring body-based creative process in nature
-- the human body meets stone, tree, and water in forest, lake,
and planes of granite...
We meet at Sierra Hot Springs in Sierraville, California, where we start with two days of workshops in an outdoor studio and in the woods of Tahoe National Forest, with access to hot springs and sauna. We begin the workshop Saturday at Noon at Sierra... participants can either arrive that morning or come a day early to have some time at the hot springs before we begin. Karl will be leading exercises in Contact Improvisation, Authentic Movement, and Viewpoints approach to improvisation/composition. We will also here have some time to ground together and meet each other creatively, as well as make sure that everyone has appropriate gear.
Monday morning, we pack up and breakdown the studio tent and we head out to the trailhead together. Everyone should have some extra room in their packs for hiking in a share of group food and cooking supplies. The hike in to base camp will be between 5 to 10 miles of moderately strenuous hiking. We set up camp when we arrive take some time to land and do a little personal exploring before we begin work together.

What is included in the fees:
facilitation, hot springs fees for Saturday/Sunday, basic vegetarian fare for breakfast/dinner (all collaborate on cooking/cleaning, and bear hang).
What you need:
transportation to Sierra Hot Springs, your own backpacking gear (pack, appropriate clothes, sleeping bag, pad, shelter (tent/tarp, etc), snack and lunch food in a bear-hangable sack. Your pack should have enough space for you to carry a share of the group gear and food.
Transportation to the trailhead is not included in the fees,
but assistance with carpooling will be provided as we get closer
to the dates.
Note on experience levels:
This event is open level, but everyone should have some experience with both wilderness backpacking and movement exploration. With regards to movement, while contact improvisation will likely be a strong reference point for many in the workshop, it is not the sole window on creative process we will explore and previous experience, though recommended, is not necessary.

With regards to wilderness experience, it is expected that everyone already have some experience with backpacking. While advice is cheerfully given, this is not a workshop on wilderness backpacking basics and people should be comfortable with taking care of themselves in nature and with leave-no-trace ettiquette.
Usually, there is in the project an interesting mix of people with more wilderness time and people with more body-based creative exploration experience, and the skill sharing is part of what makes the project interesting.
