Do Festival

dates are TBA, but within the next year in the San Francisco Bay Area

-- a festival exploring the growing multitude of practices of dance, theatrical, and performance work as process and participatory event: paratheatrical work, participatory theater, dance/theater/music therapy practices, participatory performance, contact improvisation, authentic movement, ritual, circle song, theater of the oppressed, and the evolving art of electronic music parties to name some reference points without limiting imagination  -- a festival of events, workshops, performances, discussion, and laboratory where people can come experience, learn, and share creative work that is meaningfully about our personal process and our interconnections with each other.
 -- a festival celebrating active creative process and collaborative creativity as having its own vital value

We celebrate creative work as personal and social exploration/practice/play -- valuable beyond any goals of performance -- and also at performance work that breaks beyond the proscenium to work with a fully active and physically engaged "audience".

this festival is "under construction", but a rough  view of what the schedule might look like follows...

evening Events (some closed, but most open to the public)

There would be 2 (or 3) simultaneously used studios of classes, labs, discussions, and events, so that a wide array of practices, techniques, ideas, and explorations could be presented, with everyone following through it a path directed by their own curiosity.

A main feature of the festival will be the evening "Events".  These Events, open to the public, will be places where we get to explore directly participatory performance works, group ritual, different frames of  movement  and creative process.

The Day time activities will be about studying the art of framing activity, going personally deeper into exploration, and how to facilitate that deepening exploration for others.

Afternoon classes would be with a very wide range of instructors in many different forms, shedding different lights on creative process and ow to use it for self exploration, interconnection, and having a more pleasurable life. These classes will be interspersed with occasional lab spaces, to give space for participant generated  explorations.  Discussion spaces give space for dialog around principles, techniques, objectives, and visions around process-based work.  The morning Intensives would be spaces where selected creator/director/teachers would work with a consistent group on creative process for the duration of the festival, with one of the aims being the creation of an "event" on the final weekend, facilitated by the students.

Specific practices, groups, bodies of work that interest us: Contact Improvisation, Authentic Movement, Butoh, Ritual work, participatory performance, Theater of the Oppressed, Process Oriented Psychology, dance/music/drama therapy,  performance art, process-oriented performance, paratheatrical work, Playback Theater, electronic music parties, 5 Rhythms work, Contemplative Movement, circle song

This festival aims to further activate and connect a growing generation of creators into bringing creative process into a more integrated place in our lives, looking at life itself as an art.

We would love to hear if the festival piques your curiosity, and especially if you have feedback about structure or content. If you would like to be involved and/or if you think of some practice that should be on the list or an instructor who would be interesting, feel free to contact.

For the moment, write to director Karl Frost.

We initiate this project with the feeling that it is a new and needed gathering that could be part of a greater process of deepening our investigation of how we choose to live our lives, personally and collectively.  We expect the participation to be rich and the conversations lively!

Time line: At the moment, the vision is being put out for feedback, and teachers and creators are being drawn into the conversation.  We should be able to say  to what degree it will be happening in 2006 by sometime in late March, at which time we will have the skeleton of a schedule together and list instructors and directors.  {body}
